Jack Storms is an American Glass artist who uses glass with a cold lathe in order to create effects that the world has never seen before. His sculptures are often multiversal, allowing the viewer to experience a different universe of colours and textures depending on which angle they choose to view the sculpture from.
See below.
I am interested in the work of Jack Storms for a multitude of reasons.
- His work relates indirectly to my work with crystal growing.
The incredible effects given by Storms's layering of colours and textures leads to a glimmering effect similar to that of a diamond (or perhaps many, many diamonds.)
- Certain angles of his sculptures remind me directly of my own work with nail foils as seen below. I am a fan of the use of lighting in sculpture to create different and powerful effects.
- I enjoy his use of smooth, luxurious clear glass that looks like crystal, smoothed into soft curves that appear natural. The beautiful curves contrast strongly with the strong, sharp geometric shapes elsewhere in the sculpture.
This relates indirectly to my use of "natural" and "geometric" pattern in my own work.
I love the way that Storms' pieces seem to "encapture" and "absorb" the beautiful sharp lines of colour and pattern inside pure crystal clear glass.
It is almost as if the colour has been paralysed within. I am interested in this idea of paralyzation as explored in my previous pieces.
It is common that the insects in my pieces appear to be paralyzed in the crystals that grow over them.
I would like to draw inspiration from Storms' pieces for my future works. I am especially drawn by his use of colour and light, as I feel that it is a bold statement to use such a bright spectrum of colours in art nowadays, as too many bright colours can appear "childish" under some circumstances. Storms' pieces are eternally elegant and effective. The bright colours are what makes his art so incredible, in my opinion.
If I was going to recreate one of Storms' pieces myself, I would like to experiment with foils and resin rather than glass.
